Throughout the month of April, all Washoe County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicles will display the Donate Life logo and staff members will wear lapel pins to show their support for organ, eye and tissue donation during National Donate Life Month. This observance focuses attention on the importance of registering to be a donor, while also honoring those who have saved and healed lives through donation.
More than 119,000 people in the United States are currently waiting for a transplant and a second chance at life, including nearly 600 Nevadans. On average, 22 people die each day because the organ they need is not donated in time. In addition, nearly 1 million tissue transplants are completed each year, and 48,000 people will receive the gift of sight through cornea donation.
"We want to help bring some awareness to this important mission," Washoe County Undersheriff Susan Schilling. "Every time people see the Donate Life logo throughout the community, we hope they will consider making the important decision to register."
Registering your decision to become a donor is the most effective way to save lives through donation and is a sign of support to those who continue to wait. Documenting your decision is easy:
- Select "yes" when asked "do you want to be an organ donor?" at the Department of Motor Vehicles
- Register your decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor in the Medical ID tab of the iPhone Health app (iOS 10)
- Register any time online at www.nvdonor.org
- Visit the Nevada Highway Patrol offices in Reno, Elko or Las Vegas during business hours and sign up using their registration kiosks
