The Human Exploitation and Recovery Operations (HERO) Unit was established in 2024 by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office to lead the fight against human trafficking and all forms of exploitation. Our mission is clear: to protect the most vulnerable members of society by dismantling trafficking networks, preventing exploitation, and offering recovery to victims with compassion and dignity.

We achieve this through a multifaceted approach centered around three core principles:

Prosecution: Our team is dedicated to thoroughly investigating, arresting, and prosecuting individuals involved in human trafficking and exploitation. We are committed to ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice and held accountable for their crimes.

Protection: Safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable individuals is our top priority. We provide immediate intervention and support services to survivors, offering a secure environment for them to begin their recovery and reintegration into society.

Prevention: We are proactive in educating the public about human trafficking and exploitation. Through community awareness campaigns and victim assistance programs, we empower individuals to recognize the warning signs and take action, fostering a culture of vigilance and support that aims to prevent future victimization.

The HERO Unit is fully committed to protecting public safety through all lawful means and ensuring the well-being of our communities. Our team includes one Detective Sergeant and four Detectives from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, one Detective from the University Police Department, one Detective from the Pyramid Lake Police Department, and one Victim Advocate from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
