Dangers of leaving a child unattended in a car

Since 1998, an average of 37 children a year across the United States have died in cars from heatstroke. Many people are shocked to learn that the inside of a car can rise 20 degrees in 10 minutes and keeps getting hotter with each passing minute. And cracking the window doesn't help.

Heatstroke sets in when the body isn't able to cool itself quickly enough. Young children are particularly at risk as their bodies' heat up 3 to 5 times faster than an adult's. Children simply can't cool their bodies fast enough to handle the extreme heat. Within minutes, about the time it takes to buy milk in the store, a child can sustain brain or organ damage. And when a child's temperature reaches 107 degrees; the child is at risk of death.

Good people can make bad, life altering decisions. Many parents think they're just going to run a quick errand and don't realize the damage just a few minutes in a hot car can have on their child.

So, what can you do if you see a child alone in a vehicle?

  • Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Police, Fire and Medical will be dispatched immediately. Emergency personnel are trained to respond these types of situations and will enter the car by any means necessary.
  • Be a good witness. Describe in detail where you are, and give the dispatcher information as to the condition of the child.
  • Do not confront the caregiver or guardian.
  • Let emergency responders gain entry into the vehicle. Police, fire and medical can break into a car to rescue an unattended child without incurring liability. Without proper training, the child can be severely injured by the shattered glass.

In Nevada, leaving a child younger than 7 years old in a vehicle without proper supervision (someone at least 12 years old) is child endangerment. It is a crime and there are severe consequences for the parent or caretaker who leaves their child unattended in a vehicle in unsafe conditions.

Bottom line; take your child with you, even if it's for a few short minutes.
