The Victim Advocate provides assistance to Victims of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking. When a person has been victimized, it is crucial that they get the answers to their questions and start to regain a sense of safety and power. After a person has been a Victim of Crime, they often become overwhelmed with all of the changes, stress and emotional turmoil. The Victim Advocate is able to step in and provide the emotional and practical support for the victim and their family. The Victim Advocate assesses the victim's short term needs and long terms goals with the victim.
The Victim Advocate primarily works with women who are a victim of domestic violence; however, men are also impacted by domestic violence. The face of a domestic violence victim is not restricted to gender, economics or ethnicity. By working together with all local community resources, the hope is to provide the best resources possible to the critical needs of those who have been impacted by crime.
The Victim Advocate will assess the victim’s individual needs and concerns and provide a variety of support and services. The Victim Advocate can help members of the community who have been victimized by helping them with:
* Safety Plan Development
* Personal Advocacy
* Referrals to Community Resources such as counseling, support groups and resources
* Provides updates on the status of their criminal case
* Assists in filing for Victims of Crime Compensation
* Assist in filing for a Temporary Protection Order or Stalking Order
* Informs the Victim of Victim's Rights
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has received support for this project and the Victim Advocate has been with the Sheriff’s Office since. This project is supported by a grant awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice.
